Remaining discussion questions

  • ·      It’s clear from the readings that Melville finds Whales to be creatures of great majesty and that he also detests the killing of such creatures. Having said that, what are the implications of making Ishmael’s best friend/lover/Queequeg a harpooner, someone who kills whales?

  •  ·      After Moby Dick is spotted, why does the whale’s gender change? “There she blows!” vs. “Ahab was caught in his (the whales) wake.”

  •       Who does Ahab worship? Ahab is often seen talking about god and making religious allusions but he is also often seen using satanic or Lucifer imagery. Does Ahab worship god or the Devil? Something else?

  • ·      We discussed in class Ahab as a tragic hero. What qualities does Ahab have that show good in him and when do they show up?

  •  ·      What do all of the different kids of animals in the book represent? Whale, Sharks, Birds, Seals, etc. Each seems to serve as symbol for something different

  •       What is the significance of the Manxman’s prophecy about the drowned sailors?
